Swim Survival Skills Training

  • Age: Adult (Active Duty) 
  • Objective:  The purpose of the Swim Survival Skills Training is to teach Marines of all swimming abilities (or lack of ability) how to successfully and safely pass the WSB & WSI swim qual.
  • Entry Requirement: Must be Active Duty Marine
  • Skills Covered: Vary based upon student needs.
  • Where: Hansen Aquatic Center
  • When: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00 – 12:00, 12:00 – 13:00, & 16:30 – 17:30
  • No pre-registration required.

Starfish

30 minute class | 18 months–3 years old

In our Starfish class, we introduce babies and toddlers (6 months to 3 years old) to the water in a fun and nurturing environment. Parents are a crucial part of this experience, as they accompany their little one in the water at each class. Through playful water exploration, we help children become comfortable in the water while teaching essential swimming readiness skills. Parents will learn helpful techniques for supporting and holding their child, while also gaining important water safety knowledge. The class emphasizes safety, fun, and connection as parents' guide their children through water activities that promote confidence and readiness for future swimming lessons. Starfish is the perfect way to begin building a positive relationship with the water while ensuring safety and comfort for both parent and child!


Tadpoles

30 minute class | 3–4 years old l NOTE: Child must be fully potty trained

Little swimmers are ready to explore the wonders of the water! In our Tadpoles class, children ages 4 to 6 (must be potty trained) are introduced to the basics of water safety while building confidence in the pool. With a focus on fun, safety, and independence, we guide these young adventurers through essential skills like blowing bubbles, gliding, and floating. Each class provides a safe and supportive environment where kids will practice using their arms and legs to move through the water, while mastering the basic movements for both front and back strokes. Through games, songs, and playful exercises, Tadpoles help foster a love for swimming while helping children develop their kicking, arm strokes, and floating techniques. It’s all about making those first steps into the water feel exciting and comfortable, setting the stage for a lifetime of aquatic fun!


Minnows

30 minute class | 5–6 years old 

In our Minnows class, children ages 5 to 6 are ready to take their water skills to the next level! This class focuses on building confidence and helping little swimmers refine their basic swimming techniques. Minnows will practice important skills like entering the water using the pool steps, bobbing, and opening their eyes underwater to retrieve objects. Minnows will practice entering and exiting the pool safely, submerging their mouth, nose, and eyes, and learning breath control. They’ll also work on front and back floats with recovery to a stand, changing direction in the water, and swimming up to 5 feet on both their front and back Through fun activities and supportive instruction, our Minnows will feel more confident in the water and excited to keep progressing in their swimming journey!


Jellyfish

30 minute class | 7–8 years old 

In our Jellyfish class, children ages 7 to 8 dive into the world of swimming with a focus on building comfort and confidence in the water! This class helps young swimmers develop essential water skills in a fun and supportive environment. As they grow more comfortable, they’ll master front and back floats, glides, and rolls, while learning to tread water for up to 15 seconds. With a focus on combined arm and leg action for both front and back strokes, Jellyfish are introduced to key swimming techniques that set the foundation for future swimming success. Through engaging activities and encouraging instruction, our Jellyfish swimmers will gain the skills they need to enjoy the water safely while continuing to grow in their swimming journey!


Manta Rays

30 minute class | 9-10 years old  

In our Manta Rays class, children ages 9 to 10 build confidence and success with fundamental swimming skills! This class focuses on developing strong water skills through engaging instruction and fun activities. Manta Rays will practice entering the water by stepping or jumping in from the side, fully submerging their head, and mastering breath control with bubble-blowing. They’ll refine techniques like front and back glides, swimming on their side, and swimming 15 feet on their front and 10 feet on their back. Additionally, they’ll learn important water safety skills, including life jacket use. With supportive coaching and plenty of practice, our Manta Rays will strengthen their swimming abilities and gain the confidence to continue progressing in the water!


Sea Lions

30 minute class | 11-12 years old

In our Sea Lions class, swimmers ages 11 to 12 take the next step in their aquatic journey with an introduction to strokes! This class focuses on building confidence and skill in the water while developing foundational stroke techniques. Sea Lions will refine their swimming abilities through guided practice, learning the basics of key strokes to enhance their efficiency and control. With a focus on technique, endurance, and water safety, swimmers will gain the skills they need to move through the water with greater ease. Through fun and supportive instruction, our Sea Lions will build a strong foundation for future swimming success while growing more confident and capable in the pool!


Tiger Sharks

30 minute class | 13-14 years old

In our Tiger Sharks class, swimmers ages 13 to 14 refine their skills and build endurance as they advance in their swimming journey! This class focuses on developing stroke technique, strength, and confidence in the water. Tiger Sharks will work on perfecting their strokes, improving efficiency, and increasing their swimming distance. With an emphasis on endurance, coordination, and water safety, swimmers will gain the skills needed to navigate the water with confidence. Through focused instruction and guided practice, our Tiger Sharks will continue to grow as strong, capable swimmers, setting the stage for lifelong aquatic success!


Streamliners

30 minute class | 15 years old and older

In our Streamliners class, swimmers ages 15 and older develop essential aquatic skills in a supportive and encouraging environment! This class is designed to help participants build confidence in the water while learning fundamental swimming techniques. Streamliners will work on improving proficiency in the six basic swimming strokes, as well as gaining important water safety knowledge to help themselves or others in an aquatic emergency. With personalized instruction tailored to individual needs, swimmers will enhance their skills, increase their comfort in the water, and develop the ability to swim with greater ease and efficiency. Whether they’re new to swimming or looking to refine their technique, our Streamliners will gain the confidence and skills needed for safe and successful swimming!


Competitive Training

Okinawa Dolphin Swim Team is excited to offer competitive training experience for swimmers with prior competitive experience or those new to the competitive side of the sport. We provide training and competition opportunities for swimmers who can demonstrate the ability to swim 25m butterfly, 25m backstroke, 25m breaststroke, and 50m freestyle.

FAQ

Q: What swim levels does MCCS Aquatics support?
 
A: We support a comprehensive recreational and competitive training program for all ages.
 
Q: How often are classes held? 
 
A: Hansen: Once you select a day and time, you’ll attend that day and time every week. Classes are held weekly.
McTureous, Plaza and Kinser: Once you select a week, you’ll attend classes for four days that week, with each session lasting 30 minutes. Classes are held Tuesday through Friday. Sign up is by the week.
 
Q: How long does the program run? 

A: Hansen: We run a year-long swim lesson program. 
McTureous, Plaza and Kinser: We run an 8 week summer swim lesson program from late June to early August.
 
Q: What if there is thunder or lightning?

A: If we see thunder or lightning, the pool must close for 30 minutes, and everyone must leave the pool deck.

Before Your Lesson: If thunder or lightning happens within 20 minutes of your lesson start time, we will cancel the lesson for the day.
Example: If your lesson is at 12:30 p.m., we will cancel it if thunder or lightning occurs at 12:10 p.m. or later. However, if it happens at 12:09 p.m. or earlier, the lesson will continue as planned.
During Your Lesson: If thunder or lightning occurs during a lesson, the rest of that lesson will be canceled.
We will try our best to contact you if a lesson is canceled, but please understand that we may not always be successful. If you’re unsure about your lesson, please call the pool directly.

Q: What if there is a typhoon?
 
A:

TC-2: Youth and Masters Swim Team practice are canceled, pools "clean-up" (lane-lines stored, etc.).

TC-1: Pools close. The pool may close earlier than TC-1 if weather conditions warrant.

TC-All Clear/Storm Watch: Clean-up procedures to re-open a pool after a typhoon can vary from a few minutes to a few days. Swim Team resumes no earlier than 24 hours after All-Clear/Storm Watch. We want to get back to practice as soon as possible but realize that we cannot use the pools until they are in working order. If in doubt, contact the pool.
